Thermal burns are the most common household burns, occurring from hot water, steam, hot surfaces, or direct flames. Correct first aid makes a significant difference in treatment outcomes and reduces the risk of scarring and complications.
First Aid Steps:
- Remove the heat source immediately: Extinguish flames or move the person away from the heat source while ensuring your own safety.
- Cool the burn under running cool water: Place the affected area under cool (not ice-cold) running water for a full 20 minutes. This is the single most important step.
- Remove clothing and jewelry: Gently and before swelling occurs, unless stuck to the skin.
- Cover the burn with a clean dressing: Use clean plastic wrap or a non-adhesive dressing.
- Do NOT use toothpaste, butter, or ice: These substances increase damage and cause infection.
