Skin grafting is the primary solution for third-degree burns and deep burns that cannot heal on their own. Grafting techniques have evolved significantly in recent years, notably improving functional and aesthetic outcomes.
Modern Grafting Techniques:
- Full Thickness Skin Graft (FTSG): Taken from areas like abdomen or inner thigh — gives better aesthetic results and greater flexibility, suitable for exposed areas like face and hands.
- Split Thickness Skin Graft (STSG): Cut at thin thickness — donor site heals on its own, suitable for large areas.
- Meshed Graft: The harvested skin is perforated to expand and cover larger areas — useful when burn area is large and available skin is limited.
- Artificial Skin Substitutes: Such as Integra and Matriderm — used as a first layer under the graft to improve final scar quality.
- Keratinocyte Cell Culture: An advanced technique used to cover large areas using skin cells grown in the laboratory.
