Hot liquid scalds are the most common type of burn in children, especially under age 5. Children's skin is much thinner than adults', meaning the same temperature causes a deeper burn.
Correct Steps Immediately:
- Remove clothing soaked with hot liquid immediately: Gently and quickly — clothing retains heat and continues damaging skin.
- Cool with running cool water for 20 minutes: Not ice-cold — very cold water causes hypothermia in young children.
- Do NOT use ice, toothpaste, or flour: All are harmful and increase damage.
- Cover the burn with clean plastic wrap: Protects from infection and reduces pain, and allows the burn to be seen at the center without removing the dressing.
- Keep the child warm: Cover with a blanket while keeping the burn area exposed and cooled.
