Burn contractures are among the most serious long-term complications of deep burns, especially those over joints. They occur when scar tissue contracts during healing, gradually restricting joint movement.
Most Vulnerable Joints:
- Neck: Contracture prevents full head elevation and affects appearance.
- Axilla: Prevents raising the arm above the head.
- Elbow and wrist: Restricts arm extension and daily movements.
- Fingers: Among the most difficult contractures, significantly affecting hand function.
- Knee and ankle: Affects walking and mobility.
Prevention and Treatment:
Prevention starts from day one with range-of-motion exercises and proper positioning (Splinting). The joint is placed in an extended position opposite to the pull direction during rest. Daily movement exercises are essential even if painful. Custom splints are worn between exercise sessions.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we start the contracture prevention program early. If contracture occurs despite prevention, we refer to a plastic surgeon for contracture release surgery followed by an intensive rehabilitation program under our supervision.
