Burn healing passes through three main overlapping stages, and understanding each stage helps patients and families manage expectations realistically and commit to the treatment plan.
Healing Stages:
- Inflammatory phase (days 1-5): The body responds with swelling, redness, and fluid secretion. Immune cells clean damaged tissue and fight bacteria. This swelling is normal and does not necessarily indicate infection.
- Proliferative phase (weeks 1-6): The body begins building new tissue. New blood vessels form (pink granulation tissue). Skin cells migrate from wound edges to cover the area. This phase is critical and requires appropriate dressings and good nutrition.
- Remodeling phase (months to two years): Collagen is reorganized and the scar gradually matures. It transforms from thick and red to lighter and smoother. During this period, silicone, pressure, and massage make the biggest difference.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we follow our patients through all stages with regular scheduled visits. We adjust the treatment plan at each stage to ensure the best possible outcome. Long-term follow-up is the key to success.
