Can alternative medicine and herbs be used in burn treatment?

A very common question in Jordan and the Arab world. Short answer: do not use any alternative treatment on an open burn without consulting your doctor. Many folk remedies cause actual harm.

Common Alternative Treatments — Fact vs. Myth:

  • Medical honey (Manuka): Has limited scientific evidence for some wound types — but regular unsterilized honey causes infection. Used only within medical protocol.
  • Aloe Vera: May help with mild sunburn only. Not suitable for deep burns and does not replace medical treatment.
  • Toothpaste: Completely harmful — causes inflammation and deepens the burn. One of the worst folk remedies.
  • Raw egg: Risk of Salmonella bacterial infection — absolutely prohibited.
  • Flour or starch: Causes contamination and makes wound cleaning difficult — prohibited.
  • Butter or oil: Traps heat in the skin and increases damage — prohibited.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we respect our patients' beliefs but their safety comes first. We explain with scientific evidence why some treatments are harmful, and provide effective and safe medical alternatives.
