Post-burn pruritus (itching) is one of the most bothersome and common symptoms burn patients experience, significantly affecting sleep and daily life.
Why Itching Occurs:
- New nerve growth: During skin healing, new nerves are hypersensitive, sending strong itch signals.
- Dry skin: New skin produces less oil than normal, making it dry and itchy.
- Histamine: Mast cells in the healing area release histamine causing itching.
Itch Management Methods:
- Intensive moisturizing: Moisturize skin 3-4 times daily with rich, fragrance-free creams. This is the most important step.
- Antihistamines: Tablets like cetirizine reduce itching, especially the evening dose to help with sleep.
- Skin cooling: Cold compresses or cooling gel provide immediate relief.
- Avoid heat and sweating: Hot environments significantly increase itching.
- Soft cotton clothing: Avoid rough and synthetic fabrics that irritate skin.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we provide a comprehensive itch management plan customized for each patient combining medication, skin care, and lifestyle modifications.
