Air travel with a burn requires advance planning and your doctor's approval, but is possible in many cases with some important precautions.
Air Travel Considerations:
- Low cabin pressure: Cabin pressure equals altitude of 6000-8000 feet causing gas expansion in the body. Blisters and inflated dressings may be affected.
- Dehydration: Aircraft air is very dry, increasing scar and new skin dryness. Moisturize the scar frequently and drink extra water.
- Clotting risk: Extensive burn patients may be more susceptible to deep vein thrombosis. Move regularly and wear compression stockings.
- Sun protection: UV rays are stronger at high altitudes. Close the airplane window shade or use sunscreen on exposed scars.
Practical Tips:
Carry extra dressings and painkillers in hand luggage. Carry a medical report from BEIT TARIQ Center explaining your condition (useful at security). Sit in an aisle seat for easy movement. Inform our team before travel and we will help you prepare and schedule follow-up appointments upon your return.
