What are the modern dressings used for treating diabetic foot ulcers?

Modern dressings have revolutionized diabetic foot ulcer treatment — the dressing is no longer just a wound cover but an active part of treatment creating an optimal healing environment.

Moist Wound Healing Principle:

Research has proven that wounds heal 50-100% faster in a moist environment compared to dry. Modern dressings maintain optimal moisture.

Types of Modern Dressings:

  • Foam dressings: Absorb excess exudate while maintaining optimal moisture. Comfortable and cushion the wound.
  • Hydrogel: Add moisture to dry wounds and aid autolytic debridement. Excellent for necrotic tissue.
  • Alginate: From seaweed — absorb 15-20 times their weight and stop light bleeding.
  • Silver dressings: Contain antibacterial silver ions — used for infected ulcers.
  • Medical honey (Manuka): Natural antibacterial that promotes healing and reduces odor.
  • Collagen matrices: Provide a scaffold for new tissue to adhere to and accelerate healing.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we select the appropriate dressing based on wound stage and change it as healing progresses. We use the same internationally approved brands used in Britain.
