A very important question asked by many of our patients in Jordan. The decision depends on several factors and must be made in consultation with your medical team — diabetes doctor and wound specialist.
Factors Affecting the Decision:
- Diabetes type: Type 1 patients on insulin — risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia is higher.
- Ulcer severity: A simple ulcer (Wagner 1) with good treatment is different from a deep infected ulcer (Wagner 3).
- Antibiotics: If on oral antibiotics — must be taken regularly and the schedule may need adjustment between Iftar and Suhoor.
- Dehydration: Dehydration slows wound healing and thickens blood, increasing clotting risk. Summers in Jordan are hot.
Tips if You Decide to Fast:
Drink large amounts of water between Iftar and Suhoor. Moisturize the ulcer well. Monitor blood sugar regularly. Break fast immediately if you feel hypoglycemia symptoms or notice changes in the ulcer.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we offer a special pre-Ramadan consultation for each patient to create an appropriate plan, intensify visits during the month, and adjust medication schedules.
