What is Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (VAC) for diabetic foot ulcers?

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (VAC - Vacuum Assisted Closure) is an advanced technique that has revolutionized the treatment of large, deep diabetic foot ulcers that don't respond to conventional treatment.

How VAC Works:

A special foam is placed in the ulcer cavity and covered with an airtight film, then connected to a suction device creating continuous (or intermittent) negative pressure that removes excess fluid and bacteria while stimulating new tissue growth.

Benefits of Negative Pressure Therapy:

  • Accelerated granulation tissue: Stimulates new blood vessel and cell growth by up to 63%.
  • Ulcer size reduction: Suction contracts wound edges and pulls them toward the center.
  • Reduced infection: Continuous removal of bacteria-laden fluids.
  • Less dressing changes: Stays on 48-72 hours — less patient disruption.
  • Graft bed preparation: Prepares the wound bed for skin grafting.

Who Benefits from VAC:

Large ulcers (larger than 4 cm²), deep ulcers after surgical debridement, ulcers slow to respond to conventional treatment.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we offer this advanced technique and teach patients how to care for the device at home.
