Iron Deficiency Anemia

How is iron deficiency anemia treated?

Anemia treatment depends on deficiency severity and cause — treatment includes iron replacement and addressing the root cause.

Treatment Steps:

  • Oral iron tablets: First line — Ferrous sulfate or Ferrous gluconate. Dose 100-200 mg elemental iron daily. Take on empty stomach with orange juice (vitamin C increases absorption).
  • IV iron infusion: For severe cases or oral intolerance. Ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject) — sometimes one dose is enough. Faster and more effective than tablets.
  • Blood transfusion: Only in critical cases (hemoglobin below 7 with symptoms).
  • Treat the cause: Stop bleeding (treat hemorrhoids, regulate periods). Treat absorption issues. Modify diet.

Treatment Duration:

Usually 3-6 months — hemoglobin rises within 2-4 weeks but iron stores take months to refill. Don't stop tablets when symptoms improve!

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we provide IV iron therapy (Ferinject) in-clinic — one quick, safe session.
