The right medical mattress is the second line of defense after repositioning in pressure ulcer prevention. But it's not a substitute for repositioning — it's a complement.
Types of Medical Mattresses:
- High-density foam: Better than regular foam — better pressure distribution. Suitable for low-medium risk.
- Memory foam: Conforms to body shape — excellent pressure distribution. Suitable for medium risk.
- Alternating Pressure mattress: Air cells inflate and deflate alternately every few minutes — automatically changes pressure points. Best for high risk and patients with existing ulcers.
- Low Air Loss mattress: Wicks moisture and cools skin — excellent for incontinent patients.
- Water mattress: Less commonly used — difficult to transport and clean.
How to Choose:
Based on risk level (Braden/Waterlow scale), patient weight, whether an ulcer already exists or we want prevention only.
