Colostomy irrigation is a wonderful technique allowing some colostomy patients to control the timing of output instead of waiting for it to happen — meaning wearing only a small cap instead of a pouch all day.
How Irrigation Works:
The patient introduces lukewarm water (500-1000 ml) through the stoma using a special irrigation bag and soft cone. Water stimulates the colon to empty all its contents within 30-45 minutes. Afterwards — there may be no output for 24-48 hours.
Who Benefits from Irrigation:
- Left-sided colostomy patients only — sigmoid or descending colon.
- Formed output and regular pattern.
- No frequent diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome.
- Physically able to perform the procedure (30-45 minutes every day or two).
Benefits:
Freedom from the pouch for many hours — just a small cap. Greater confidence at events, swimming, and intimacy. Reduced skin problems and leakage.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we teach irrigation technique in detail and follow up until patient mastery, assessing suitability for each case.
