Intimacy with a stoma is entirely possible and normal — but anxiety about it is one of the most common concerns expressed by our patients. It requires open communication and some practical adjustments.
Practical Tips:
- Communication with partner: Honesty is key. Explain to your partner what the stoma is and that it doesn't hurt when touched. Most partners are more understanding than we expect.
- Preparation: Empty or change the pouch before intimacy. Use a small closed pouch or stoma cap (especially for irrigation users).
- Underwear: Wear specialized ostomy underwear — covers the pouch elegantly and gives confidence.
- Positions: Try different positions that reduce pressure on the stoma.
- Stoma belt: Secures the pouch firmly and prevents movement and leaks.
Possible Physical Issues:
Men: erectile dysfunction may occur after some rectal surgeries (nerve damage). Women: vaginal dryness or pain may occur. These are treatable problems — consult your doctor.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we discuss this topic with professional openness because we believe quality of life includes all its aspects.
