This is a very important question in our Jordanian and Arab community. Religion facilitates and does not complicate — there are clear religious rulings that make it easy for stoma patients to practice their worship comfortably.
Ablution and Prayer:
- Ablution (Wudu): The stoma is treated as continuous incontinence — the patient performs ablution for each prayer time and prays even if output occurs during prayer. The ablution is valid.
- Pouch: Having a pouch does not invalidate prayer — it is treated like a medical bandage. It is wiped over and does not need to be removed.
- Cleanliness: Clean around the stoma, wash, and perform ablution. Cleaning inside the pouch is not required.
Fasting:
Fasting is a medical matter first — especially for ileostomy patients who lose significant fluids. Consult your doctor. If approved: drink plenty between Iftar and Suhoor, monitor output volume, break fast immediately if you feel dehydrated.
Hajj and Umrah:
Entirely possible with planning — carry sufficient supplies, wear a support belt, choose heat-resistant pouches.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we respect the religious and cultural aspects of our patients and provide Sharia-compatible guidance.
