Choosing the right stoma pouch is one of the most important quality of life factors for an ostomate. The wrong pouch causes leaks, skin irritation, and embarrassment, while the right one provides confidence and comfort.
Types of Stoma Pouches:
- One-piece pouch: Pouch and adhesive base are one unit — simple and lightweight. Suitable for those with healthy skin around the stoma.
- Two-piece pouch: Adhesive base (flange) stays on skin + pouch clips onto it. Base stays 3-4 days, pouch changes daily — less skin irritation.
- Closed pouch: Use and dispose — suitable for colostomy with formed output.
- Drainable pouch: Has a bottom opening for emptying — suitable for ileostomy and urostomy.
Selection Factors:
Stoma size (diameter) must match the pouch opening exactly. Opening too large = leaks and irritation. Abdomen shape (flat, curved, creased) determines base type. Output type determines closed or drainable.
