Changing a stoma pouch is a skill every patient learns and becomes expert at within a few weeks. It may seem scary at first but becomes a simple routine.
Steps in Detail:
- Preparation: Prepare everything in advance — new pouch, scissors (if cutting needed), cleaning wipes, adhesive remover spray, barrier powder, and mirror if needed.
- Removal: Remove the old pouch from top to bottom gently. Use adhesive remover spray if removal is difficult — never pull forcefully.
- Cleaning: Clean skin around the stoma with warm water only (or dedicated wipes). No regular soap — it leaves a residue preventing new pouch adhesion. Pat dry, don't wipe.
- Inspection: Check surrounding skin — look for redness, ulceration, fungus. Check the stoma itself — should be pink/red and moist.
- Application: Measure stoma diameter. Cut pouch opening 2-3mm larger. Remove adhesive backing. Apply from bottom up. Press around edges for 30 seconds to warm the adhesive.
