Stoma complications are relatively common — affecting 20-70% of patients according to studies. But most can be treated successfully and many can be avoided with proper care.
Common Complications:
- Parastomal Hernia: Most common — bulging around the stoma due to weakened abdominal muscles. Occurs in 30-50% of cases. Wear a support belt and avoid heavy lifting.
- Stoma Retraction: The stoma recedes below skin level — causes leakage. Needs a convex baseplate.
- Blockage: Undigested food blocks the intestine at the opening. Pain, bloating, and output stoppage. Chew well and avoid skins and seeds.
- Stoma Prolapse: Excessive intestine protrusion from the opening. Usually not dangerous but annoying. May need surgical repair.
- Stenosis: The stoma opening narrows due to scarring — output becomes difficult. Needs dilation.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we detect complications early during regular follow-up visits and treat them before they progress.
