How do I control odor with a stoma?

Odor anxiety is the biggest concern for new stoma patients. The good news: with the right products and techniques, odor can be completely controlled so no one knows the stoma exists.

Important Facts About Odor:

Modern stoma pouches are designed with odor-resistant films — there should be no odor while wearing the pouch correctly. Odor only appears when changing or emptying the pouch.

Odor Control Strategies:

  • Deodorant drops: Placed inside the pouch before application — absorb odor and convert it to a neutral or pleasant smell.
  • Carbon filter: Most modern pouches have a filter that releases gas without odor. Make sure it's not blocked.
  • Regular emptying: Empty the pouch when one-third full — full pouches are more prone to leaks and odor.
  • Foods: Avoid eggs, garlic, onions, and cabbage if they increase your odor.
  • Yogurt and parsley: Noticeably reduce odor.
  • Bathroom spray: Special sprays for the toilet bowl before emptying — prevent odor spread.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we provide all these products and teach you to use them so you can live with complete confidence.
