Odor anxiety is the biggest concern for new stoma patients. The good news: with the right products and techniques, odor can be completely controlled so no one knows the stoma exists.
Important Facts About Odor:
Modern stoma pouches are designed with odor-resistant films — there should be no odor while wearing the pouch correctly. Odor only appears when changing or emptying the pouch.
Odor Control Strategies:
- Deodorant drops: Placed inside the pouch before application — absorb odor and convert it to a neutral or pleasant smell.
- Carbon filter: Most modern pouches have a filter that releases gas without odor. Make sure it's not blocked.
- Regular emptying: Empty the pouch when one-third full — full pouches are more prone to leaks and odor.
- Foods: Avoid eggs, garlic, onions, and cabbage if they increase your odor.
- Yogurt and parsley: Noticeably reduce odor.
- Bathroom spray: Special sprays for the toilet bowl before emptying — prevent odor spread.
