Choosing the right dressing depends on ulcer type, healing stage, and exudate amount. No single dressing is ideal for all cases — the choice changes as the wound evolves.
Dressing Types by Wound Condition:
- Foam: Most commonly used for venous ulcers with moderate to heavy exudate. Absorbs fluid and maintains optimal moisture. Can be used under compression.
- Alginate: From seaweed — excellent for wounds with heavy exudate or light bleeding. Converts to gel when absorbing fluid.
- Hydrogel: For dry wounds or those with dead tissue — moisturizes the wound and aids autolytic debridement.
- Silver dressings: Antibacterial — used when infection is present or at risk. Time-limited (two weeks then reassess).
- Hydrocolloid: For small ulcers with low exudate in healing phase.
Fundamental Principle:
Moist environment heals 3-5 times faster than dry — so we never let wounds dry out.
