Atopic eczema is the most common allergic skin disease — chronic inflammation causing severe itching, redness, and dry skin. Affects 20% of children.
Allergy Relationship (Atopic March):
- Eczema in infancy: First station — usually starts 3-6 months.
- Food allergy: Appears between ages 1-3.
- Allergic rhinitis: Appears ages 3-7.
- Asthma: Develops at ages 5-12.
- Not everyone goes through all stages — but eczema triples asthma risk.
Symptoms:
- Severe itching — worse at night.
- Redness, dryness, and scaly skin.
- In infants: face, cheeks, and elbows.
- In adults: behind knees, elbows, neck.
Treatment:
- Continuous moisturizing: Most important step — fragrance-free moisturizer 2-3 times daily.
- Topical corticosteroid: To calm inflammation — according to severity.
- Antihistamines: To reduce nighttime itching.
- Avoid triggers: Strong soap, wool clothing, sweat.
