Spring allergy (hay fever) is one of the most common health problems in Jordan — due to heavy pollen from olive trees, cypress, and grasses.
Seasons in Jordan:
- February-April: Tree pollen (olive, cypress) — most severe season.
- May-July: Grass pollen.
- August-October: Weed pollen and ragweed.
Symptoms:
- Frequent sneezing — 10-20 times consecutively.
- Clear watery runny nose.
- Severe itching in nose, eyes, and throat.
- Red watery eyes.
- Nasal congestion worsening at night.
Management:
- Medications: Antihistamine (Cetirizine or Fexofenadine) — one pill daily throughout the season.
- Nasal spray: Mometasone or Fluticasone — start 2 weeks before season.
- Eye drops: Olopatadine — for itching and redness.
- Environmental tips:
- Close windows in the morning (pollen peak 5-10 AM).
- Shower and wash hair when returning home.
- Use HEPA filter in AC.
- Avoid drying clothes outdoors.
