What is spring allergy and how to manage it in Jordan?

Spring allergy (hay fever) is one of the most common health problems in Jordan — due to heavy pollen from olive trees, cypress, and grasses.

Seasons in Jordan:

  • February-April: Tree pollen (olive, cypress) — most severe season.
  • May-July: Grass pollen.
  • August-October: Weed pollen and ragweed.

Symptoms:

  • Frequent sneezing — 10-20 times consecutively.
  • Clear watery runny nose.
  • Severe itching in nose, eyes, and throat.
  • Red watery eyes.
  • Nasal congestion worsening at night.

Management:

  • Medications: Antihistamine (Cetirizine or Fexofenadine) — one pill daily throughout the season.
  • Nasal spray: Mometasone or Fluticasone — start 2 weeks before season.
  • Eye drops: Olopatadine — for itching and redness.
  • Environmental tips:
    - Close windows in the morning (pollen peak 5-10 AM).
    - Shower and wash hair when returning home.
    - Use HEPA filter in AC.
    - Avoid drying clothes outdoors.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we treat spring allergy with a comprehensive medication plan before the season starts.
