Scar massage is an essential part of the post-burn rehabilitation program, and can make a significant difference in scar flexibility, texture, and appearance when practiced regularly with the correct technique.
Benefits of Scar Massage:
- Softening scar tissue: Breaks down collagen adhesions and improves scar flexibility.
- Improving blood circulation: Increases blood flow helping scars mature faster.
- Reducing sensitivity: Helps retrain nerves and reduce hypersensitivity and itching.
- Reducing adhesions: Prevents the scar from adhering to deep tissues, improving joint movement.
Correct Technique:
Use moisturizing cream or silicone gel as a medium. Start with light pressure and gradually increase. Move in small circular motions then longitudinal and transverse directions. Continue 5-10 minutes per session, 2-3 times daily. Begin after complete skin healing.
The BEIT TARIQ Center team teaches every patient and their family the correct massage technique during follow-up sessions, adjusting the program according to scar development.
