Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in burn healing speed and final scar quality. The body needs extra energy and nutrients to build new tissue and fight infection.
Essential Nutrients for Burn Healing:
- Protein (most important): The body needs extra protein to build collagen and new tissue. Eat plenty of meat, fish, eggs, legumes, and dairy products. Patients may need 1.5-2 times normal amounts.
- Vitamin C: Essential for collagen production and infection resistance. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, guava, and strawberries are excellent sources.
- Zinc: Supports cell division and immunity. Nuts, meats, and whole grains are zinc-rich.
- Vitamin A: Supports new skin cell growth. Carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach are primary sources.
- Vitamin E: Antioxidant protecting cells from damage. Nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.
- Adequate water: Dehydration significantly slows healing — drink at least 8-10 glasses daily.
