Exercise after burns is not just allowed but strongly encouraged for its significant benefits in improving scar flexibility, mental health, and overall fitness. But timing and type matter.
When to Start:
- Light range-of-motion exercises: Begin immediately after stabilization — even during the dressing phase — to prevent contractures and maintain range of motion.
- Light exercises (walking, yoga): After complete skin healing and doctor approval — usually after 4-6 weeks.
- Moderate and intense exercises: Gradually over time as strength and flexibility improve.
- Swimming: After all wounds have completely healed. Avoid public pools for an additional month. Use water-resistant SPF 50+ sunscreen on scars when swimming outdoors.
Important Precautions:
Protect the scar from friction. Wear pressure garments during exercise. Drink adequate water as burned skin loses moisture quickly. Stop if you experience pain or excessive swelling.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we create a customized physical activity program for each patient that progresses according to healing stage and burn type.
