Scar massage is a simple but highly effective technique patients can apply at home daily. It improves scar flexibility and appearance, reducing itching and pain — especially after burns and surgeries.
Massage Benefits:
- Breaking adhesions: Scars may adhere to deeper tissues — massage breaks them and improves movement.
- Softening scar tissue: Repeated pressure breaks rigid collagen fibers and realigns them.
- Reducing itching: Improves blood circulation in the scar and calms sensory nerves.
- Desensitization: Painful-to-touch scars become less sensitive with regular massage.
- Improving appearance: Scars become smoother and less raised over time.
Massage Technique:
- When to start: After complete wound healing (no scab, no exudate).
- Method: Steady pressure with thumb in circular motions on and around the scar. Then perpendicular pressure pulling skin in all directions.
- Duration: 5-10 minutes, 2-3 times daily.
- Moisturizer: Use vitamin E cream or regular moisturizer as lubricant.
