Cosmetic Suturing

What types of surgical sutures are used in cosmetic suturing?

Choosing the right suture is a crucial factor in cosmetic outcome. We use different types depending on wound location and depth.

Suture Types:

  • Absorbable Sutures:
    • Vicryl (Polyglactin) — for deep layers. Dissolves in 60-90 days.
    • Monocryl (Poliglecaprone) — flexible and smooth. Ideal subcuticular. Dissolves in 90-120 days.
    • No removal needed — dissolve on their own.
  • Non-absorbable Sutures:
    • Nylon (Ethilon) — finest suture for skin. 6-0 and 7-0 for face.
    • Prolene (Polypropylene) — least tissue reaction. Ideal for sensitive areas.
    • Removed after healing (3-14 days depending on location).

Suture Thickness:

  • Face: 6-0 or 7-0 (finer than hair).
  • Hands: 5-0.
  • Body: 4-0 or 3-0.
  • Deep layers: 3-0 or 2-0.

The Rule:

The thinner the skin and more sensitive the area, the finer the suture we use.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we use the finest surgical sutures from Ethicon (Johnson & Johnson).
