Daily diabetic foot care is the most important preventive step a patient can take to prevent ulcers and serious complications. This routine must become a daily habit like brushing teeth.
The Ideal Daily Routine:
- Visual inspection (every morning and evening): Examine all parts of the foot — between toes, sole, heel. Use a mirror or ask for help if you cannot see the sole. Look for any redness, swelling, blisters, or cuts.
- Daily washing: Wash feet in lukewarm water (not hot — test with elbow first) with mild soap. Do not soak feet for more than 5 minutes to avoid excessive skin softening.
- Thorough drying: Gently dry with a soft towel, especially between the toes where moisture causes fungal infections.
- Moisturizing: Apply moisturizing cream to the entire foot except between the toes. 10% urea creams are excellent for moisturizing dry skin.
- Shoe inspection: Before wearing shoes each time — insert your hand and feel inside for pebbles, sock folds, or any foreign objects.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we teach every patient this routine in detail and provide illustrated handouts to take home.
