Most ear piercing complications are minor and treatable — and prevention is easy with proper care.
Common Complications:
- Mild infection: Most common complication. Redness, pain, swelling. Treatment: cleaning + antibiotic ointment. Usually no need to remove the earring.
- Nickel allergy: Redness, itching, rash around the hole. Solution: gold or titanium earring.
- Keloid: Raised pink scar growing around the hole — more common in darker skin tones. Treatment: cortisone injections or surgical removal.
- Earlobe tear: Earring pulled forcefully — splits the lobe. Needs cosmetic suturing.
- Backing embedding: Back piece embeds in skin — from excessive pressure. Solution: leave space between earring and ear.
Prevention:
- Medical piercing with sterile needle.
- Medical earrings (no nickel).
- Regular daily cleaning.
- Don't touch with dirty hands.
