You can soften wax at home but actual washing is best done at the doctor. Here's what you can safely do.
Safe Home Methods:
- Olive oil: 2-3 drops in the blocked ear — twice daily for 3-5 days. Softens wax to come out naturally.
- 3% Hydrogen peroxide drops: 2-3 drops — breaks up wax. You'll hear bubbling — normal.
- Pharmacy drops: Cerumol or Waxsol — available over the counter.
- Warm water after softening: After 3-5 days of softening — tilt head under warm shower.
Prohibited:
- Ear candles: Dangerous — no scientific evidence they work + burn risk.
- Cotton swabs or pins: Push wax in or scratch the canal.
- High-pressure fluids: Don't use a high-pressure syringe — eardrum risk.
When to Stop and See Doctor:
- Pain during drops.
- Discharge or blood from ear.
- No improvement after 5 days.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we advise safe methods and provide professional washing if they don't work.
