Ear washing is possible for children but needs extra caution — their canals are smaller and more sensitive.
Children and Wax:
- Children usually produce less wax — but their canals are narrower so blockage is possible.
- Cotton swabs: Many parents use them — the most common cause of wax buildup in children.
- Foreign bodies: Children put things in their ears — beads, erasers, insects.
Ear Washing in Children:
- Age: Usually safe after age 3 — before that we prefer other methods.
- Technique: Lower water pressure — smaller catheter — greater caution.
- Cooperation: Child needs reassurance — sometimes parents gently hold their head.
- Alternative: Manual removal with fine forceps under otoscope — better for young children.
Tips for Parents:
- Never clean your children's ears with cotton swabs.
- If you see wax at the opening — wipe with a towel only.
- See doctor if you notice hearing loss, pain, or discharge.
