Both remove earwax but the technique and indications differ. We'll explain the difference so you understand which suits you.
Ear Irrigation:
- Technique: Warm water pumped into the canal — washes out wax.
- Advantages: Quick, effective, inexpensive.
- Disadvantages: Contraindicated with perforated eardrum — may cause temporary dizziness — slightly messy (water).
- Best for: Soft or moderate wax — no previous ear problems.
Microsuction:
- Technique: Fine suction device — vacuums wax under microscope or otoscope.
- Advantages: Safe with perforated eardrum — very precise — clean without water.
- Disadvantages: More expensive — loud noise (annoying for some) — needs special equipment.
- Best for: Perforated eardrum patients — ventilation tubes — previous ear surgery — young children.
Which to Choose:
- If your ear is healthy with no history of problems → irrigation is sufficient and effective.
- If you have a perforation or previous surgery → microsuction is safer.
