Diet plays an important role in controlling uric acid levels — reducing purines reduces attacks.
Foods to Avoid (High Purine):
- Organ meats: Liver, kidneys, brain — highest purines.
- Red meats: Beef, lamb — in large quantities.
- Seafood: Sardines, anchovies, mussels, shrimp.
- Sweetened beverages: Fructose juices and soft drinks.
- Alcohol: Beer especially — significantly raises uric acid.
Safe and Beneficial Foods:
- Low-fat dairy: Lowers uric acid — yogurt, low-fat milk.
- Vegetables: All are safe including spinach and cauliflower (previously wrongly forbidden).
- Fruits: Cherries especially — scientifically proven to reduce attacks.
- Legumes: Chickpeas, lentils, beans — safe in moderation.
- Coffee: 2-3 cups daily may lower uric acid.
- Water: 2-3 liters daily — helps kidneys excrete uric acid.
