Irritable Bowel Syndrome

What is IBS and what are its main symptoms?

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is a common functional digestive disorder affecting 10-15% of the population worldwide. It's not structural — no actual intestinal damage exists.

Main Symptoms:

  • Recurrent abdominal pain: Usually improves after bowel movement — linked to changes in bowel habits.
  • Bloating and gas: Abdominal distension especially after eating.
  • Diarrhea (IBS-D): Frequent diarrhea episodes — especially morning or after meals.
  • Constipation (IBS-C): Difficulty with bowel movements and hard stools.
  • Alternating diarrhea and constipation (IBS-M): Most common type.
  • Mucus in stool: Without blood — mucus with blood needs urgent investigation.

What Distinguishes IBS:

  • Symptoms worsen with stress and anxiety.
  • Does not cause weight loss or bleeding (if present, another cause exists).
  • Improves with lifestyle and dietary changes.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we diagnose IBS accurately and rule out organic diseases before treatment.
