Confusion between IBS and IBD is very common — but they're completely different diseases in severity and treatment.
IBS:
- Functional disorder — no structural damage.
- Doesn't show on endoscopy or labs.
- Doesn't cause bleeding or weight loss.
- Doesn't increase cancer risk.
- Treated with lifestyle changes and simple medications.
IBD:
- Organic inflammatory disease (Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis).
- Clearly visible on endoscopy — ulcers and inflammation.
- Causes: Rectal bleeding, weight loss, fever, severe fatigue.
- Increases colon cancer risk.
- Requires immunosuppressive drugs and sometimes surgery.
Red Flags Ruling Out IBS:
- Blood in stool.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Symptoms starting after age 50.
- Recurrent fever.
- Nighttime symptoms waking you from sleep.
- Family history of colon cancer or IBD.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we rule out organic diseases first with precise tests before diagnosing IBS.
