Recurrence rate for lipomas and cysts is very low when removal is done properly and completely.
Lipoma:
- Recurrence rate: Only 1-2% if removed completely with its capsule.
- Causes of recurrence: Part of capsule left behind → regrows.
- Prevention: Experienced surgeon removes the complete capsule.
- Note: New lipomas may appear elsewhere — this isn't recurrence.
Sebaceous Cyst:
- Recurrence rate: Higher — 10-15% if capsule not removed completely.
- Causes of recurrence: Drainage without capsule excision = near-certain recurrence.
- Removal during infection: Harder and more recurrence — so we prefer excision after inflammation resolves.
Mole:
- If removed by complete excision: doesn't recur.
- If removed by shave: some pigment cells may return.
