Skin infections are among the most common reasons for pediatric visits. Most are simple and respond quickly to treatment, but some need medical intervention.
Common Infections:
- Impetigo: Superficial bacterial infection — causes golden crusts on face and limbs. Very common in schools. Treatment: topical or oral antibiotic ointment.
- Abscess: Pus collection under skin — needs incision and drainage. Common after contaminated scratches.
- Cellulitis: Deeper skin infection — spreading redness, warmth, pain. Needs immediate antibiotic — sometimes IV.
- Paronychia: Infection around the nail — common in nail-biting children. Warm water soaking or simple incision.
- Warts: Viral — common on hands and feet. Treatment with freezing or salicylic acid.
- Ringworm: Fungal, not a worm — red scaly rings. Treatment with topical antifungal.
Prevention:
- Teaching children hand washing.
- Regular nail trimming.
- Not sharing towels.
- Immediately cleaning any scratch.
