Tetanus is a very serious disease caused by toxin from Clostridium tetani bacteria found in soil, rust, and dirt. Vaccination is the only effective protection.
Why Tetanus Is Dangerous:
- Toxin attacks the nervous system — causes severe muscle spasms.
- Jaw muscle contraction (Lockjaw) — patient cannot open their mouth.
- Spasms can break bones.
- Death in 10-20% of cases despite intensive treatment.
- No curative treatment exists — only medical support until the toxin clears.
When You Need a Tetanus Shot:
- Children: Jordanian national vaccination program gives 5 doses during childhood. Ensure your child is fully vaccinated.
- Adults: Booster dose every 10 years. Most adults haven't had a dose in years.
- When injured: Deep or contaminated wound + last dose more than 5 years ago = need immediate vaccination.
High-Risk Wounds for Tetanus:
- Deep puncture wounds (rusty nail, thorn).
- Wounds contaminated with soil or manure.
- Crush injuries.
- Animal bites.
- Burns.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we assess vaccination status for every wounded patient and give an immediate booster dose if needed.
