How important is tetanus vaccination for children and adults when injured?

Tetanus is a very serious disease caused by toxin from Clostridium tetani bacteria found in soil, rust, and dirt. Vaccination is the only effective protection.

Why Tetanus Is Dangerous:

  • Toxin attacks the nervous system — causes severe muscle spasms.
  • Jaw muscle contraction (Lockjaw) — patient cannot open their mouth.
  • Spasms can break bones.
  • Death in 10-20% of cases despite intensive treatment.
  • No curative treatment exists — only medical support until the toxin clears.

When You Need a Tetanus Shot:

  • Children: Jordanian national vaccination program gives 5 doses during childhood. Ensure your child is fully vaccinated.
  • Adults: Booster dose every 10 years. Most adults haven't had a dose in years.
  • When injured: Deep or contaminated wound + last dose more than 5 years ago = need immediate vaccination.

High-Risk Wounds for Tetanus:

  • Deep puncture wounds (rusty nail, thorn).
  • Wounds contaminated with soil or manure.
  • Crush injuries.
  • Animal bites.
  • Burns.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we assess vaccination status for every wounded patient and give an immediate booster dose if needed.
