Pressure Sores

What role does nutrition play in preventing and treating pressure ulcers?

Nutrition is an indispensable cornerstone in preventing and treating pressure ulcers. Malnutrition is the second most important risk factor after immobility, and addressing it noticeably accelerates healing.

Why Nutrition Matters:

  • Skin needs protein and vitamins to continuously repair itself.
  • Open wounds lose protein daily in exudate.
  • The immune system needs nutrition to fight infection.
  • Anemia reduces oxygen reaching the wound.

Nutritional Recommendations:

  • Protein: 1.25-1.5 g/kg daily — eggs, meat, chicken, fish, labneh, legumes. High-calorie protein supplements if needed.
  • Calories: 30-35 kcal/kg daily — healing needs energy.
  • Vitamin C: 250-500mg daily — essential for collagen formation.
  • Zinc: 15-25mg daily — supports cell division.
  • Adequate fluids: 30 ml/kg daily — dehydration slows healing.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we assess nutritional status for every patient and recommend customized dietary plans and supplements.
