Stoma Care

What should a stoma patient eat and what foods to avoid?

Nutrition after stoma surgery requires smart adjustments not deprivation — most patients return to eating most foods gradually. But understanding different foods' effects helps avoid problems.

General Principles:

  • First 6 weeks: Light, easy-to-digest foods — rice, white bread, boiled chicken, mashed potatoes, soup. Avoid high fiber and raw foods.
  • After 6 weeks: Introduce new foods one at a time to learn their effects. Keep a food diary.

Gas-Producing Foods:

Onions, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, carbonated drinks, gum. Don't ban completely — try small amounts.

Foods Increasing Liquidity:

Juices, many fresh fruits, spicy foods, coffee. Very important for ileostomy patients — may cause dehydration.

Foods That Thicken Output:

Bananas, white rice, toast, peanut butter, marshmallows.

Odor-Reducing Foods:

Yogurt, parsley, mint.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we provide comprehensive nutrition counseling customized for your stoma type and lifestyle.
