Can a stoma patient swim, travel, and exercise?

Yes to all! Having a stoma does not mean the end of an active life — millions worldwide live full, active lives with stomas. It just requires some planning and adaptation.

Swimming:

Absolutely possible! Modern pouches are waterproof. Use a small closed pouch for swimming. Empty before entering water. Wear high-waisted swimwear or with inner lining. Saltwater and chlorine don't affect the pouch.

Travel:

Plan ahead — carry double what you need in pouches and supplies in carry-on luggage (not checked). Carry a medical report for security. Know the nearest medical center at your destination.

Exercise:

Most sports are possible — walking, swimming, yoga, tennis, golf, cycling. Wear a support belt for hernia protection. Only avoid: violent contact sports (boxing, wrestling) and very heavy weight lifting.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we encourage our patients to return to normal life and provide practical tips customized for each activity.
