Regular catheter changes are essential to prevent infection and blockage. The interval depends on catheter type and patient condition.
Change Schedule:
- Latex catheter: Every 2-4 weeks. Most common. Cheap but needs more frequent changes.
- Silicone catheter: Every 4-12 weeks. More expensive but lasts longer and less irritating.
- Silver-coated catheter: Reduces infection — same schedule as silicone.
When to Change Early:
- Blockage — urine not flowing despite full bladder.
- Continuous leaking around the catheter.
- Urinary infection with fever.
- Sediment or white material blocking the catheter.
- Severe pain or discomfort.
Tips:
- Record the date of last change — so you don't forget.
- Elderly and chronic patients: we set a regular schedule.
- Don't try changing it yourself unless trained in clean intermittent catheterization.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we provide regular catheter change service in clinic or at home.
