Urinary Catheterization

What are urinary catheter complications and how to avoid them?

Urinary catheters are necessary but not complication-free. Most can be avoided with proper care.

Common Complications:

  • Catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI): Most common complication. Each additional catheter day increases infection risk 3-7%. Reduction: fluids + hygiene + regular changes.
  • Blockage: Sediment or clots blocking the catheter. Sign: no urine output + abdominal pain. Solution: flush or change the catheter.
  • Leaking: Urine leaking around the catheter. Causes: bladder spasm + constipation + improper balloon size.
  • Urethral trauma: During insertion — especially with enlarged prostate. Prevention: adequate gel + gentle technique.
  • Bladder stones: With long-term catheterization — deposits calcify.

Reducing Complications:

  • Remove catheter as soon as possible — don't keep it for "convenience".
  • Strict daily hygiene.
  • Change on schedule — no delays.
  • Drink adequate fluids.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we monitor catheter patients and minimize catheterization duration.
