Leg elevation is a simple yet highly effective measure in treating venous ulcers — working alongside compression therapy to reduce high venous pressure and swelling, and accelerate healing.
How Leg Elevation Helps:
- Reduces venous pressure: When legs are elevated above heart level, gravity facilitates blood return to the heart, lowering venous pressure.
- Reduces swelling: Accumulated tissue fluids return to circulation.
- Improves perfusion: Less swelling means less pressure on microvessels, improving oxygen delivery.
- Relieves pain: Reducing pressure and swelling noticeably relieves pain.
Correct Technique:
- Position: Lying down with legs elevated above heart level — two pillows under the leg from knee to heel.
- Duration: At least 30 minutes, 3-4 times daily. During sleep, elevate the bed end 10-15 cm too.
- Consistency: Avoid prolonged sitting with legs dangling. If sitting, place feet on a stool.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we teach patients the correct technique and explain how leg elevation complements compression therapy for best results.
