Venous ulcer recurrence is very common — recurrence rate reaches 70% within 5 years if continuous preventive measures are not taken. Healing is not the end but the beginning of lifelong maintenance.
Recurrence Prevention Strategies:
- Compression stockings: Most important measure — class 2 or 3 (23-40 mmHg). Worn daily upon waking before getting out of bed, removed at bedtime. Changed every 3-6 months as they lose elasticity.
- Leg elevation: 30 minutes 3-4 times daily. Elevate bed end during sleep.
- Exercise: Walking 30 minutes daily — calf muscle pump aids venous return.
- Skin care: Daily moisturizers as skin is dry and fragile. Avoid scratches and injuries.
- Maintain healthy weight: Obesity doubles pressure on veins.
- Regular follow-up: Check every 3 months in the first year, then every 6 months.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we offer a post-healing follow-up program including skin examination, stocking assessment, and plan adjustments as needed.
