How to control asthma and prevent attacks long-term?

The goal of asthma treatment isn't just treating attacks but preventing them entirely. Well-controlled asthma means a completely normal life.

Good Control Criteria:

  • Daytime symptoms less than twice/week.
  • No nighttime awakening from asthma.
  • Ventolin use less than twice/week.
  • No limitations on physical activity.
  • Normal lung function (PEF > 80%).

Control Plan:

  • Stick to preventer inhaler: Even without symptoms — this is the most common mistake. The inhaler prevents inflammation from returning.
  • Avoid triggers:
    - Cover pillow and mattress with mite-proof covers.
    - Clean AC regularly.
    - Don't smoke or sit with smokers.
    - Avoid strong perfumes and air fresheners.
  • Written plan: Ask your doctor for a written asthma plan — what to take daily and what during attacks.
  • Exercise smartly: Exercise is excellent for asthma — warm up 10 minutes and use Ventolin before if needed.
  • Flu vaccine: Annually — flu is the most dangerous attack trigger.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we create a personalized control plan for each asthma patient with regular follow-up.
