Metformin (Glucophage) is the first and most famous Type 2 diabetes medication — used for 60+ years with an excellent safety record.
How It Works:
- Reduces insulin resistance: Makes body cells more responsive to insulin.
- Reduces liver sugar production: Liver pumps less sugar — especially during fasting.
- Doesn't cause hypoglycemia: Because it doesn't directly stimulate the pancreas.
- Doesn't increase weight: May actually help with weight loss.
Dosage:
- Start with 500 mg with dinner — then gradually increase.
- Maximum dose: 2000-2550 mg daily divided into 2-3 doses.
- Extended Release: Once daily — fewer digestive side effects.
Side Effects:
- Digestive: Nausea, diarrhea, cramping — improve after 2 weeks. Less with Extended Release.
- Vitamin B12 deficiency: Occurs with long-term use — checked annually.
- Lactic Acidosis: Very rare — only with severe kidney problems.
Additional Benefits:
- Cardiovascular protection — reduces cardiac mortality.
- Used in polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes prevention.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we start Metformin at the right dose and monitor kidneys and B12 regularly.
