Children's wounds need special care combining surgical technique with psychological handling. Options are more than for adults.
Challenges with Children:
- Fear and crying — need calming and patience.
- Movement — hard to keep them still during the procedure.
- Thin skin — needs finer sutures.
Children's Wound Closure Methods:
- Skin glue (Dermabond): Best option for small clean wounds. Painless — applied like adhesive. Falls off on its own in 7-10 days.
- Steri-Strips: Adhesive strips — for superficial straight wounds.
- Suturing: For deep or complex wounds — with good local anesthesia.
Anesthesia for Children:
- EMLA cream 30-60 minutes before — numbs skin without needles.
- Slow anesthetic injection with fine needle.
- Talking to and distracting the child — watching a video on phone for example.
Tips for Parents:
- Stay calm — your fear transfers to the child.
- Don't say "it won't hurt" — say "it will be quick".
