Normal menstrual cycle is 21-35 days — any persistent change in duration or amount needs evaluation.
Common Causes:
- PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome): Most common cause — causes infrequent cycles, acne, excess hair, obesity.
- Hypothyroidism: Slows all body functions including cycle — heavy, frequent periods.
- Hyperprolactinemia: Prevents ovulation — causes missed or infrequent periods.
- Psychological stress: Affects brain-ovary axis — delays or stops period.
- Severe weight loss or excessive exercise: Body stops period to conserve energy.
- Obesity: Fat produces excess estrogen — disrupts hormonal balance.
- Medications: Contraceptives, antidepressants, psychiatric drugs.
- Premature ovarian failure: Ovary stops before age 40 — needs urgent hormone testing.
Required Tests:
FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, TSH, prolactin, testosterone, DHEAS — done on day 2-3 of cycle.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we diagnose menstrual disorders with comprehensive testing and refer to the appropriate specialist.
